Repairs

We work on all woodwind and brass instruments: piccolos, flutes, all clarinets, oboes, bassoons, all saxophones, trumpets, trombones, euphoniums, baritones, tubas and sousaphones.

Throughout our industry, unfortunately, there is not a defined standard for job terminology. What one shop defines as “Overhaul” or “Mechanical Overhaul” might be the same as our “Minor Repad,” etc. Below is a list of jobs we do and our definitions.

We are also able to do many specialty repairs not listed here, such as: crack pinning, tone hole replacement, replace damaged or rotted brass instrument parts, shorten or lengthen tubing for tuning purposes, braze broken keys and braces, restore damaged threads, make new hinge rods, etc. We stock many replacement parts for common makes of all instruments.

Price estimates are difficult without seeing your instrument, but we do have set price ranges — based on time — for each of the jobs listed here. Call or e-mail for an idea of job prices.

Woodwinds

PC – Playing Condition: Minimal work is done to correct minor problems and get the instrument playing again.  This job comes with a 30-day guarantee on the work done.

GPC – Good Playing Condition: More detailed work is performed that takes care of obvious problems noticed by the player and additional problems noticed by the technician.  This job also comes with a 30-day guarantee on the work done.

A&O – Adjust and Oil: A thorough check of all mechanism, pad seating, corks, key openings and key combinations is done.  Leaks are removed by reseating or replacing pads to allow easy response of all notes.  All pivot points are oiled with the keys still on the instrument.  The instrument is play tested.  This job has a 30-day guarantee.

DCA&O – Disassemble, Clean, Adjust & Oil: After complete disassembly and cleaning of all body parts, keys, key sets, pads, rods and screws, the instrument is reassembled with fresh key oil/grease and all other procedures described in the Adjust & Oil job.  Plastic, silver and brass body parts are cleaned in the Ultrasonic Cleaner; wood is cleaned with wood oil soap.  All other parts are cleaned by hand.  This job has a 30-day guarantee.

MRP – Minor Repad: The job begins with the DCA&O work explained above and adds replacement of all pads to allow airtight sealing throughout.  Corks/felts are replaced as needed.  All parts other than wood are cleaned in the Ultrasonic Cleaner. This job has a 90-day guarantee.

CRP – Complete Repad: This is the same job as the MRP, with the addition of:  key swedging to tighten looseness of each key, inspection of pad seats and correction of imperfections, replacement of all corks/felts.  Key openings are regulated for optimal sound and response.  All lost motion in the key action is removed.  This work is guaranteed for 1 year.

COH – Complete Overhaul: This work is identical to the CRP, with the addition of polishing of all metal parts.  This work is also guaranteed for 1 year.
